What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?
A Forward Deployed Engineer, often shortened to FDE, is a senior engineer who works directly with customer teams to turn an important business problem into a production-capable technical system.
The role sits across discovery, product judgement, architecture and hands-on engineering. An FDE can translate between executives, users, architects and delivery teams without separating the problem from the implementation.

What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?
A Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE, is a senior technical practitioner who works close to the customer’s business problem and engineering environment. The role combines discovery, architecture, hands-on building, production delivery and clear communication across business and technology teams.
How is an FDE different from a consultant?
An FDE does not stop at recommendations. The role remains accountable for technical decisions, working software, production evidence and the customer’s ability to operate what is built. Advice and implementation remain connected.
Does forward deployed always mean working on-site?
No. Forward deployed describes proximity to the problem, users, systems and decisions. The work may be on-site, remote or hybrid depending on security, delivery rhythm, access and the outcome required.
When should an enterprise use an FDE?
